Take 10

Take 10 is a resource for schools looking to generate whole school improvement by engaging children in daily physical activity.

Take 10 encompasses carefully selected 10-minute activity ideas, arranged in key stages and in six activity themes, to stimulate effective learning in the classroom and motivate children to become active young people.

With growing concern over obesity, and with evidence that active children are effective learners, many schools are looking for ideas to create more active young people.  The Take 10 resource makes it easier for all teachers to create an active culture within the class.

The themes of Take 10 are:

  • Action Rhymes
  • Coordination and Manipulative Challenges
  • Running and Chasing Games
  • Activities for Small Spaces
  • Aerobics
  • Skipping

Support from the Big Lottery has so far allowed us to introduce Take 10 into around half of our primary schools.  As well as being great fun schools have also reported a positive impact on:

  • school attendance - 35% improvement
  • punctuality in the morning - 34% improvement
  • performance in lessons following Take 10 - 52% improvement
  • self-esteem - 53% improvement

(All amongst targeted groups of pupils)

Feedback from teachers:

  • Previously she was reluctant to come into school, always wanting to ‘stay at home with Daddy'. Now she is really keen to come into class and to join in.
  • Take 10 stimulates children and helps to focus them. More children are now concentrating and performing to a better level.
  • The children really enjoyed this start to the day and were very keen to get here in time to take part.
