Sportivate is a nationwide £32 million National Lottery funded programme and is part of the Play strand of Sport England’s London 2012 mass participation legacy programme ‘Places People Play’.

The programme is aimed at 14 to 25 year olds, who are not currently choosing to participate in sport in their own time, or are doing so for a very limited amount of time – and will support them to continue playing sport in their community after the initial coaching period. Sportivate aims to bring about behavioural change by encouraging participants to regularly take part and transitioning them into regular sustained participation.

Nationally, Sportivate will ensure that up to 300,000 participants will complete coaching courses over the four year funding period, with at least two in five of them (120,000 participants) continuing to play sport regularly.

In 2011-12, 387 14 - 18 year olds from North Oxfordshire were 'engaged' (participated in at least one session) in the Sportivate Programme. 256 of those went on to complete 6 of the initial 8 sessions.

Following this success, North Oxfordshire School Sport Partnership and Cherwell District Council have been awarded funding to deliver the following sports and activities to 14 – 18 year olds in our 8 Partnership Secondary Schools between now and March 2012.

  • Golf (Tom Jones, Drayton Leisure Golf Range & Andy Taylor, Kirtlington Golf Club)
  • Sway Dance and Fitness/Gym (Parkwood Leisure)
  • Trampolining (Carleen Betteridge)
  • Tennis (James Woodward, Bicester Tennis Club)
  • Volleyball (John Ballance, Cherwell Volleyball Club & Sylwia Holmes)
  • Table Tennis (Karl Bushell, Kidlington Forum Table Tennis Club)

In partnership, we have worked hard with the relevant coaches and community clubs/groups to provide a clear and appropriate pathway from the initial ‘school based’ activity through to attendance at sessions away from the school site.  All our coaches are associated with local community clubs, and offer a familiar friendly face when participants attend club based sessions for the first time.

In addition, all clubs and organisations have committed to a reduced membership package for those young people that attend at least 6 of the initial 8 FREE sessions, in order to help sustain their involvement with their chosen sport.
