Junior Sports Personality of the Year

Oxfordshire Junior Sports Person of the Year – Hollie Roberts.

The Oxfordshire Sports Awards was on Friday the 9th December 2011 and was held at the Oxford United, Kassam Stadium. I had been nominated for ‘Junior Sports Peron of the Year’. There were roughly 90 people who had been entered into this category which was then narrowed down to just three people. Thankfully, I was lucky enough to be one of these 3 finalists.

The night started off with a performance, which my brother and I had been asked to do. We thought carefully and prepared a routine, which included two kata’s and a fight scene, involving karate, gymnastics, and MMA (Mixed Martial Arts). The presenters started off with a small introduction about both of us, then we did our walk in. I performed my kata first and then my brother followed, then we moved onto our fight scene. After we had done this performance we had many people coming up to us congratulating us and saying what an amazing performance we had produced.

Everyone sat down for the meal and then shortly after they moved onto the awards. When it got to my category I waited anxiously along with my Mum, Dad, Brother, close friends and Kevin and CJ who own the gym I train at. They said a small piece about each of us final 3 in the category, then we waited in silence to hear the winner announced….and it was ME! I had won Junior Sports Person of the Year. I was overjoyed to have won this award, and very surprised. It had topped off the night, and definitely finished the year on a high. I collected my award and certificate, and had the photographs taken. I was thrilled.

Throughout the rest of the evening I had TV, newspaper, radio and Cherwell Valley people coming to see me and congratulating me, asking for interviews. It really did make me feel so proud of myself and feel like a great sense of achievement. It was great to be recognised for a sport that I enjoy doing and have always been dedicated to. A great end to 2011.
