Making school a happy, healthy place to be!

On Friday 23rd October, we delivered our first Primary Young Workforce Conference, supporting 60 Year 5 & 6 students to be inspiring Young Leaders!

The conference encompassed 3 leadership stands, Change 4 Life Champions, School Sport Organising Crews and Playground Leaders, with each supporting the same underlying message – providing more opportunities for ALL Young People to be active and healthy at your school.

The workshops covered topics such as encouraging healthy eating, being more active, school games values and playground activities, with leaders working together to generate ideas and strategies that they would like to work on and deliver once back in their school.

The day also enabled the students to develop their own skills, with many growing in confidence as the workshops progressed – leading discussion, sharing ideas with the whole group and devising and delivering their own activities.

To add to the excitement and generate further inspiration, we were delighted to be joined by Team GB Men’s Water Polo Captain at London 2012, Craig Figes, who supported the students throughout the day. Craig shared some brilliant stories with the young leaders about his experiences of PE & Sport growing up, as well as some inspiring examples of the difference they could make to their school environment.

At the end of the conference, students were asked to share what they had learnt during the day and what they planned to do as a result. Below are a few of their comments.

“We want to make our school a happy, healthy place to be”

“I’m going to be a good role model within my school”

“We’re going to develop more exciting games for break and lunch time – using STEP to make the games easier/harder”

“I want to go outside more and ride my bike”

“We learnt to try to eat 5 vegetables/fruits a day”

“I have learnt that you need to respect other children’s ideas and ways”

“That I can be a confident leader and that when I am around other children I should be confident”

“We discovered teamwork and encouraged people to be friends”
