Bicester Family Year 5/6 Tag Rugby

Over one hundred Year 5 and 6 children participated in the recent Bicester Family Primary Schools’ Tag Rugby Festival held at the Bicester School in a wet November afternoon.

Thirteen teams from seven Primary Schools took part including Brookside, Bure Park, Chesterton, Five Acres, Fritwell, Kings Meadow and Southwold.  Nine teams competed in the Cup competition with the remaining four teams taking part in the Plate Competition.

Chesterton B, Kings Meadow C, Five Acres C and Brookside B played each-other in a round robin format to decide positions for the play-off games in the Plate event.  Five Acres C and Brookside drew 2-2 to come equal third.  Chesterton B won all three of their Pool games and defeated Kings Meadow C 6-1 in the Plate final.

After a series of round-robin group matches in the Cup competition, teams played a further play-off pool consisting of winners, runners-up and third place pools to determine final positions.

In the Friendly Pool Brookside won both their games to take top spot, Southwold were runners-up and Fritwell third.

In the Runners-up’ pool Chesterton B remained undefeated to finish first, Bure Park were closely behind in second place and Kings Meadow C third.

The winners’ pool finished in a three way tie with all teams securing two draws.  Five Acres A were the eventual winners having scored one more try than both Kings Meadow A and Five Acres B.  Congratulations to all three teams who have qualified for SSP Finals on 12th November at Banbury RFC.

During the event, the Spirit of the Games value of teamwork was a key focus area. A child from each team was selected and presented with a special certificate to recognise the excellent teamwork skills they had shown throughout the competition.

Andy Gordon, chairperson of the mini and junior sections at Bicester R.F.C., attended the Festival to offer support to the leaders, encourage the young players and signpost them to further opportunities within their local community club.

Thank you to Andy Gordon, Bicester School Sport Leaders, teachers and all Participants for contributing to a fantastic event which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

“Students loved the event and have since developed a passion for tag rugby.”  (Teacher)

“Thank you for organising the event and also to the young leaders who helped referee today.  The children had a great day and improved the more matches they played.” (Teacher)

A great event again, some great games on show.  Thanks to our Mr Mawn and the young leaders, who do a difficult job.” (Teacher)
