Bicester Family Year 5/6 Tag Rugby Festival

Bicester Family Year 5/6 Tag Rugby

Over one hundred and fifty Year 5 and 6 children participated in the recent Bicester Family Primary Schools’ Tag Rugby Festival held at the Bicester School on a dry October afternoon.

Sixteen teams from seven Primary Schools took part including Brookside, St Edburg’s, Chesterton, Five Acres, Fritwell, Kings Meadow and Southwold.  Twelve teams competed in the Cup competition with the remaining four teams taking part in the Plate Competition.

Chesterton B, Kings Meadow D, Five Acres C and St Edburg’s played each-other in a round robin format to decide positions for the play-off games in the Plate event.  Five Acres C came in 4th position, Kings Meadow D in third.  Chesterton B won all three of their Pool games and defeated St Edburg’s C in the Plate final to take the win.

After a series of round-robin group matches in the Cup competition, teams played a further play-off pool consisting of winners, runners-up and third place pools to determine final positions.

In the Friendly Pool Chesterton A won both their games to take top spot, Kings Meadow B were runners-up.

In the Runners-up’ pool Five Acres A remained undefeated to finish first, Southwold A were closely behind in second place.

The winners’ pool games were very competitive and all the pupils were very determined to take the top spot.  Kings Meadow A were the winners having scored the most points during the final round, followed by Fritwell A.  Congratulations to both of the two teams who have qualified for SSP Finals on Tuesday 15th November at Banbury Rugby Club.

During the event, the Spirit of the Games value of teamwork was a key focus area. A child from each team was selected and presented with a special certificate to recognise the excellent teamwork skills they had shown throughout the competition.

Andy Gordon at Bicester R.F.C., attended the Festival to offer support to the leaders, encourage the young players and signpost them to further opportunities within their local community club.

Thank you to Andy Gordon, Bicester Rugby Football Club, Bicester School Sport Leaders, teachers and all participants for contributing to a fantastic event which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

“Thank you for organising the event and also to the young leaders who helped referee and lead warm ups.  The children had a great day and improved the more matches they played.” (Teacher)
