Banbury Area Swimming Gala

The Banbury Area Schools Swimming Gala took place at Spiceball Leisure Centre, Banbury on Thursday 10th November 2016. Forty-four children in Year 5 and 6 participated in the competition from four schools including St. John’s, Bishop Loveday, Hanwell Fields and Hill View Primary Schools.

Teams took to the water to compete in 6 events over 25m displaying amazing ability and technique throughout.  The events included Individual Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Butterfly, followed by Freestyle and Medley Relays,

During the gala, the Spirit of the Games value of determination was a focus area and the young swimmers strove to succeed, enthusiastically cheered on by their team mates. A girl and a boy from each school were presented with a special certificate to recognise the high level of determination they had shown.

The Gala was well delivered by student young leaders from Blessed George Napier Catholic School who organised swimmers, collated results and had a tough job on the finish line with some very close races. The standard of competition was again high.

Bishop Loveday won five out of six races to win the girls’ competition.  St. John’s came runners-up with Hill View third and Hanwell Fields fourth.  The boys’ competition was extremely close with St. John’s winning by just three points and Hanwell Fields coming fourth.  Both Bishop Loveday and Hill View were tied on 22 points for second place.  The teams then competed in a medley relay swim-off to determine who would join St. John’s in the Partnership Final.  Both teams were neck and neck throughout with Bishop Loveday just edging out Hill View on the final lap.

Congratulations to all competitions, teachers, teaching assistants, coaches and spectators who all contributed to an enjoyable and exciting swimming gala.  Both St. John’s and Bishop Loveday teams have now qualified for the North Oxfordshire School Sport Partnership Final in a few weeks, also at Spiceball Leisure Centre.
