BGN Family ‘This Girl Can’ festival

Orchard Fields Primary School hosted the inaugural BGN Family Year 5/6 ‘This Girl Can’ festival on Thursday 9th March.   The aim of the event was to engage less active and less confident girls by promoting the many benefits and positive feelings sport and exercise can bring.  Forty-six girls from three Primary Schools  attended including Orchard Fields, St. Joseph’s and William Morris.

As Schools arrived Blessed George Napier student leaders took participants for team warm ups.  All girls were then shown the new ‘This Girl Can’ advert which was positively received.  This campaign created by Sport England aims to celebrate active women and girls.  BGN student leaders then delivered a whole group dance together with all participants , teachers and teaching assistants joining in.  Thereafter, Year 5/6 girls took part in six fun and engaging activities expertly lead by Year 8 BGN student leaders. These included dance, basketball, cheerleading, archery, relays and skipping.

Throughout the festival there was a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with upliftling music playing in the background while girls joined in the various activities.  During the festival, the Spirit of the Games value ‘Self Belief’ was a key focus area.  Two  girls  from each team were presented them with a special certificate to recognise their positive attitude, trying their best at new challenges and activities and being confident.

It is hoped that participants will feel inspired to take part in sport and exercise in the near future, both within School and the local Community.  Thank you to Orchard Fields Primary for hosting and all girls, student sport leaders, teachers and teachers who all contributed to an enjoyable and fun afternoon.
