Banbury Area Swimming Gala 2017

The Banbury Area Schools’ Swimming Gala took place at Spiceball Leisure Centre, Banbury on Tuesday 7th November 2017. Sixty children in Year 5 and 6 participated in the competition from six primary schools including Bishop Loveday, Hanwell Fields, Harriers, Hill View, The Grange and Queensway. .

Teams took to the water to compete in 6 events over 25m displaying amazing ability and technique throughout.  The events included Individual Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Butterfly, followed by Freestyle and Medley Relays,

During the gala, the games value of passion was a focus area and the young swimmers strove to succeed, enthusiastically cheered on by their team mates. A girl and a boy from each school were presented with a special certificate to recognise the high level of passion they had shown.

The Gala was well delivered by year 8 and 9 student leaders from Blessed George Napier Catholic School who organised swimmers, collated results and had a tough job on the finish line with some very close races. The standard of competition was again high.

In the girls’ competition Bishop Loveday won four out of their six races, including both relays to take first place.  Queensway won the other two individual races and consistely finished in the top three to take runners-up spot.  Hanwell Fields and Hill View came joint third, followed by Harriers fifth and The Grange sixth.  The boys’ competition was very close between the top two teams.  Bishop Loveday and Hanwell Fields had the same number of points going into the final race, the medley relay.  Bishop Loveday pipped Hanwell fields to first place in the relay and thus becoming overall winners.  Hanwell Fields took runner-up spot. Harriers performed well, including two first places to come third.  The Grange were fourth, Queensway fifth and Hill View sixth.

Well done to all competitions, teachers, teaching assistants, coaches and spectators who all contributed to an enjoyable and exciting swimming gala.  Congratulations to Bishop Loveday and Queensway girls’ teams  and Bishop Loveday and Hanwell Fields boys’ teams who have now qualified for the North Oxfordshire School Sport Partnership Final on Wednesday 6th December, also at Spiceball Leisure Centre.
