Recreation & Sport Activators

The Activator initiative was developed by the Recreation and Health Team at Cherwell District Council with the aim of encouraging more young people in the district to do more sport and recreational activity.

The initiative focuses on working in the community, in open spaces, at MUGA’s and with Youth Clubs/Groups, offering exciting and creative informal opportunities for young people aged eight to 16 to engage with ‘non-traditional’ sports such as Rock-it-Ball, Dodgeball and Ultimate Frisbee.

The Council currently employs 2 Activators, Lydia Avvan and Jake East, who cover all areas in North Oxfordshire.

In 2010, North Oxfordshire School Sport Partnership worked closely with the Activators to develop the ‘Activator Takeover’. An extension of their community programme, the Takeover sessions focus on engaging primary school children, who do not normally enjoy or participate in School Sport and PE, in activity during their lunchtimes.

The Takeover sessions proved instantly popular, and received positive early success in many of our schools. One case study from the initiative was picked up by the Youth Sport Trust and published nationally.

During 2012, the Activators will work closely with those schools delivering Change 4 Life Primary Sports Clubs, offering support and mentoring to students and deliverers.
