Bicester Family Sportshall Athletics 2017

This term the Bicester School has organised and ran two very successful Year 5/6 Sportshall Athletics competitions at Bicester Leisure Centre in which 228 children from nine Bicester Family Primary Schools participated including Brookside, St Mary’s, Chesterton, Fritwell, Five Acres, Kings Meadow, Southwold, St. Edburg’s and Heyford Park Primary Schools.

In both competitions children took part in various track and field events including; relay races, speed bounce, standing long jump and triple jump, vertical jump, javelin and chest push.

The first of the competitions took place on Wednesday 11th January and focused on gifted and talented students.  Kings Meadow Primary School won the event and will go on to represent the Bicester Family at the North Oxfordshire School Sport Partnership final in February.  The second competition took place two weeks later, Wednesday 25th January and was aimed at less active children who do not usually engage in sport and physical activity beyond lesson time.  Competitors took on a circuit of running, jumping and throwing activities with both teams and individuals winning a variety of track and field events.   There was lots of enthusiasm, effort and enjoyment on display at both festivals by all teams.

During both events, the Spirit of the Games value of passion was a key focus area. A child from each team was selected and presented with a special certificate to recognise their positive attitude and perseverance throughout the festival.

Thank you to Steve Flynn (Bicester Athletic Club) for his support and guidance at both competitions.  Thank you also to twenty-six very capable and efficient Bicester Sport Leaders who did an outstanding job at officiating both track and field events and encouraging all competitors. The pupils were a credit to the school and delivered high quality support throughout the morning.
