Term 2 Blessed George Napier Events

During term 2 forty-one Blessed George Napier student sport leaders have supported two primary school events involving over 300 participants.

BGN and Wykham Park Academy Cluster Schools joined together to take part in the Banbury Area Year 5/6 Swimming gala on Thursday 12th November at Spiceball Leisure Centre.  Seventy-five children and 16 teams from 7 schools took part including Bishop Loveday, Hanwell Fields, Harriers, Hill View, St. John’s, St. Mary’s and Queensway took part.

Teams took to the water to compete in 6 events over 25m displaying amazing ability and technique throughout.  The events included Individual Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Butterfly, followed by Freestyle and Medley Relays.  The standard of competition was again very high with some very close races.

Bishop Loveday won both the girls and boys events to be crowned Banbury Area Champions 2019.  Hanwell Fields took runners-up spot in the girls’ competition with St. John’s coming second in the boys’ competition.  All four teams have qualified for the North Oxfordshire School Sport Partnership Final on week beginning Monday 27th January 2020.

Thank you also to swimming teacher, Jean Colbourne, for offering support and guidance to the BGN student leaders and participants throughout including signposting swimmers to further opportunities at Banbury Swimming Club.

The second event involved two hundred and thirty-nine Year 2 children from all eight BGN Cluster Schools on Thursday 21st November at Blessed George Napier Catholic School.  Teams competed in various relay races including bean bag, rugby, scoop, obstacle, hurdles and baton relays.  The morning festival involved eleven teams from Cropredy, St. John’s, St. Joseph’s and William Morris and the afternoon festival included Bishop Loveday, Hardwick, Longford Park and Orchard Fields.

Competition was fierce across all races with lots of passion and determination on display.  Enjoyment amongst participants and adults was also evident with enthusiastic cheering and support. In the first festival honours were shared with three different schools winning each heat.  Cropredy A won heat 1, St. John’s B heat 2 and St. Joseph’s C heat 3.  In the afternoon festival Bishop Loveday A, B and C won their respective heats and Orchard Fields E winning heat 4.

Congratulations to all children student leaders, teachers and additional adults who contributed to two very fun and enjoyable festivals.
