School Games Football Finals

Team North School Games Round Up!

We’re super proud of all the individuals, teams and schools that have represented Team North at the Oxfordshire School Games Spring Finals over the past few weeks, including the fantastic young leaders from The Cooper School and Blessed George Napier School who between them umpired the Hockey and delivered the Sportshall Athletics.

The Warriner School KS4 Girls Badminton team kicked off the campaign way back in February, securing GOLD at the county round of the Badminton England Centre Parcs Championships – earning them a place at the regional round in Guildford where they finished in 5th place, an amazing achievement.

Blessed George Napier topped up the tally with SILVER medals for both the U13 & U15 Rowing teams. Whilst there were also SILVER medals for the Y7 Girls from The Warriner School and BRONZE medals for their Y9 Girls and The Bicester School Y11 Girls over on the netball courts.

Dr South’s and Firtwell Primary Schools continued the good form of previous Team North qualifiers in the Primary Hockey Finals, with SILVER and BRONZE respectively. Edward Field battled the extremely hot conditions facing the football teams to reach the Final of the Y3/4 Large School competition, just missing out on the top spot but claiming a fantastic SILVER.

Over in the pool there were SILVER medals for the Sibford School Girls and Blessed George Napier Boys in the U16 competitions. Deddington primary also picked up a fantastic BRONZE, followed closely by Edward Feild in 4th Place at the U11 High 5 Netball Final.

There were GOLD medals all around for Blessed George Napier Year 7’s and The Warriner School Year 8’s in the Secondary Sportshall Athletics.

The conditions at the Cross Country generated a challenging route (and re-route!), but the Team North athletes rose to the occasion, once again securing medals in all bar one race!

Ollie from Sibford Gower picked up a BRONZE in the Year 3/4 Boys race, and Bishop Loveday Girls took home SILVER in the same age group. In the Year 5/6 races Sibford School’s Tom ran his way to GOLD medal and the boys form Deddington finished well to claim a team SILVER.

The Blessed George Napier Boys were on form, picking up team GOLD in the Year 7 race and SILVER for the Y8/9 and Y10/11 Boys, with Year 7 Tom and Year 11 Charlie adding their own SILVER medals.  But it was the Year 7 Girls race where Team North had the most success – Team GOLD for Gosford Hill, following an individual SILVER for Lucy and BRONZE for Ella, team SILVER for The Bicester School and, just to add to the dominant performance, there was an individual GOLD for Sibford School’s Tilly!

There were further medals for The Bicester School’s Edward – Year 8/9 GOLD and Millie – Year 8/9 GOLD, with Amelia from The Cooper School close behind in SILVER. Mabel, a lone runner from North Oxfordshire Academy ran a wonderful race to pick up BRONZE in the Y10/11 Girls race, while the athletes from The Warriner School also had a successful afternoon with GOLD for their Year 10/11 Boys, including an individual GOLD for Owen.

Finally, the spring term concluded last week at Abingdon Gymnastics Club for the Primary Key Steps competition. After executing beautiful floor and vault routines, The Grange Primary School Year 1/2 team were awarded BRONZE, and there was individual SILVER for Hill View’s Anoushey.

Well done to every member of Team North! Qualifying for the Oxfordshire School Games finals is a fantastic achievement – we’re looking forward to seeing more teams’ progress through to the summer finals!

Sun Awareness Week – Monday 14th May to Sunday 20th May

Leading up to the British Association of Dermatologists Sun Awareness Week, and following on from the beautiful Bank Holiday Weekend weather, North Oxfordshire School Sport Partnership continues to campaign for Sun Awareness, following our previous accredited support of the Melanoma Fund.

The campaign was designed to tackle melanoma, one of the UK’s most common cancers in young people, by helping to develop and support sun protection practices for all those who work outdoors with children.

Just a few serious sunburns can increase everyone’s risk of melanoma by 80%.  With 86% of melanomas attributed to excessive sun exposure, and levels of melanoma rising in the UK, sun protection habits need to change.

To encourage this change, North Oxfordshire School Sport Partnership has a Sun Protection Pledge, which is promoted and endorsed by our team at all our outdoor events, as well as through our direct support of PE and Sport in Schools.

Walk to School Week – Monday 21st May to Friday 25th May 2018.

Walk to School Week, taking place each May, is a country-wide celebration of walking. Each year Living Streets, the UK Charity for everyday walking, puts together a fun themed challenge to take on while walking to and from school. In 2017 400,000 children and their families joined the challenge and got a taste of the many benefits the simple act of walking can bring.

You can sign up for the 2018 Challenge and download fantastic assembly and curriculum resources here.
