Tag Rugby the Winner at Banbury Area festival

On a dry Autumn day, two hundred and ten excited Year 5 & 6 children participated in the Banbury Area Primary Schools’ Tag Rugby Festival held on Thursday 20nd October 2016 at Banbury Rugby club

Twenty-two teams from ten Primary Schools took part in the festival which included Dashwood, Hanwell Fields, Harriers, Hill View, St. Leonard’s, St. Mary’s, The Grange, Cropredy, Orchard Fields and St. John’s.

Sixteen teams contested the cup competition with the remaining six teams battling it out in the plate competition.  As the tournament progressed with players getting to grips with the tag rugby rules, all teams improved with plenty of skill, effort and determination on display.  Many matches were end to end with lots of tries being scored.  All sixty-eight matches were expertly refereed by BGN Student young leaders

Following a series of round robin matches, St. Leonard’s B defeated Orchard Fields C in the first semi-final and Cropredy C beat St. John’s C in the second Semi-final to contest the final. In an entertaining game St. Leonard’s B continued their winning streak by narrowly defeated Cropredy C 5-3 to win the Plate Competition

In the Cup competition after teams competed against one another in their respective Pools, they played a further seeded Pool in the second round of games.   St. John’s B won all their games to win Pool D, Hill View B remained undefeated to win Pool C and Cropredy A recorded three wins to win Pool B.

In a competitive and high quality Pool A which involved teams that topped their group in the first round of round robin matches, St. John’s A edged out Hanwell Fields A on try difference to be crown Banbury Area Year 5/6 Tag Rugby Champions 2016.  Hill View A pipped Harriers on tries scored to take third and fourth spot respectively.  All four teams have qualified for the North Oxfordshire School Sport Partnership Tag Rugby Final on Tuesday 15th November at Banbury Rugby Club.

During the event, the Spirit of the Games value of teamwork was a key focus area. A child from each team was selected and presented with a special certificate to recognise the excellent teamwork skills they had shown throughout the competition.

Keith Oakes, chairperson of the youth sections at Banbury R.F.C attended the Festival along three other coaches at the club to offer support to the leaders, encourage the young players and signpost them to further opportunities within their local community club.
