Big Celebrations Planned for National School Sport Week

Released: 22nd June 2009 at 15:00 PM

North Oxfordshire School Sport Partnership is busy preparing for National School Sport Week 2009, with the promise of a visit from one of Great Britain's top Olympians.

The week, which is sponsored by London 2012 main sponsor Lloyds TSB, aims to excite and motivate pupils to do more sport by celebrating and profiling all that's been achieved in PE within schools, and launching new sport based initiatives.  From 29 June to 3 July 2009, Lloyds TSB School Sport Week will take place across the country, helping to encourage pupils and fulfill objectives for PE and school sport using the inspiration of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and Values.

National School Sport Week was launched in February 2008 by the Prime Minister and Dame Kelly Holmes and will be an annual event leading up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.  The week is integral to the delivery of the Government's PE and Sport Strategy for Young People and contributing towards the target of offering young people five hours of high quality PE and sport every week by 2012.

All 45 Primary, 3 Special and 7 Secondary schools from North Oxfordshire have signed up to be part of the week.  With this in mind, the School Sport Partnership is offering a number of new, exciting and wide ranging opportunities for young people to, in addition to the sports days, festivals and competitions already arranged by individual schools.

The celebrations will kick off on the evening of Monday 29 June at The Cooper School in Bicester with a display of talent from across the partnership.  The event will showcase performances from both Primary and Secondary age ranges in Dance, Gymnastics, Trampolining and Jump Rope.

A number of sports coaches will be on hand during the week to deliver fun sessions and offer extra support.  While sports clubs in the area will be opening their doors and offering their facilities and coaching expertise.  Banbury, Bicester and Kidlington Lloyds TSB branches will also be supporting the week.

The culmination of the week's activities will be a Celebration of Sport Day on Friday 3 July.  Around 300 young people are expected to attend the event at the School Sport Partnership hubsite, Blessed George Napier School in Banbury, and will get the opportunity to participate in taster sessions delivered by local sports clubs and groups in sports such as Handball, Gaelic Football, Ultimate Frisbee, Street Cheer and Jump Rope.  There will also be a one mile fun run, displays and inspirational presentations from some of our local sporting stars.  The partnership is also expecting to be allocated a visit from a current British Olympian.
