Bicester Area Yr U9 Quicksticks Hockey

Following on from the highly successful Bicester Area Schools Quicksticks Hockey Festival for children in Years 5 and 6 in November, a similar event for children in Years 3 and 4 took place on March 2 at Cooper School.

The event was organised by Chris Birch, Development Officer at Bicester Hockey Club, in conjunction with Cooper School. Sixteen teams took part in the competition from Langford Village, Brookside, Longfields, Five Acres, Fritwell, Launton, King's Meadow and Glory Farm Primary Schools. The focus of the event was on promoting skill and positive attitudes in a competitive but friendly environment. The young players braved the elements, including, at times, high winds, rain and hail, with all emerging as "winners" having thoroughly enjoyed the experience!

Young Leaders from The Cooper School expertly umpired the matches and guided and encouraged the younger children. Bicester Hockey Club coaches and volunteers supported at the event and signposted the young players to further playing opportunities at their local club. Rey, the Bicester Hockey Club mascot, made an appearance at the festival to add to the fun for the children.

During the event, the Spirit of the Games value of respect was a focus area and sporting behaviour was demonstrated by the young participants throughout. A child from each team was presented with a special certificate to recognise the high level of respect they had shown to others.

The highly successful partnership of Bicester Hockey Club and the North Oxfordshire School Sport Partnership Schools in the Bicester Area, built up in recent years, has meant that hundreds of young people have been introduced to, and have had fun playing, hockey. Many have joined Bicester Hockey Club’s Junior Section and it is hoped that the children who have participated in this festival will have been similarly inspired.

As always a very inclusive event. Despite the weather, all the children had a great time and played lots of hockey. All children improved during the course of the afternoon". (PE Coordinator Fritwell)

"All children enjoyed the hockey. A great afternoon, thank you". (Teaching Assistant, Launton)

"A big thank you to the leaders who did a fantastic job in such cold weather". (PE Coordinator, King's Meadow)
