Year 5/6 Kwik Cricket Festival at BGN

The annual Year 5 and 6 Kwik Cricket Festival for the BGN Family of Primary Schools took place on Thursday 18th May at Blessed George Napier School in glorious sunshine. One hundred and twenty-two children from Bishop Loveday, Cropredy, Hardwick and Orchard Fields Primary Schools took part.

Eight teams competed in the boys’ competition and a further five in the girls’ competition which were expertly umpired and scored by thirteen competent Year 7and 8 student leaders. With teams playing across six pitches there was plenty of cricket skills and enthusiasm on display throughout the day.

Cropredy were dominant in the girls’ competition winning all of their matches.  Bishop Loveday narrowly edged out Orchard Fields A to take runner-up spot.  Hardwick defeated Orchard Fields B in their deciding match to come fourth and fifth respectively.

Following the morning round-robin matches both Cropredy and Bishop Loveday A lead the way recording three victories a piece.  Teams finishing third and fourth respectively in their pool competed in the plate competition.  Bishop Loveday B were victorious, defeating Hardwick B in the final.  Orchard Fields B team won the school battle to come third ahead of Orchard Fields C team.  In a high quality Cup final Bishop Loveday A bowled well in the final few overs to restrict Cropredy’s run chase and hold out to win by six runs.  Orchard Fields A won an entertaining third place play-off to defeat Hardwick A.

Congratulation to both Cropredy (girls) and Bishop Loveday A (Boys) who represent the BGN family at the Level 3 County Kwik Cricket finals in July.

During the event, the Spirit of the Games value of passion was a key focus area. A player from each team was selected and presented with a special certificate in recognition of their positive attitude and perseverance throughout the festival.

The festival proved a big success with all children developing their fielding, bowling and batting skills in a fun and competitive environment.  It is hoped that many have been inspired to continue playing cricket both in school and their local community.  Well done also to the Year 7 and 8 BGN student leaders who were fantastic role models in encouraging and supporting all participants throughout the day.
