Term 1 Blessed George Napier Events

During term 1 thirty-eight Blessed George Napier student sport leaders have supported three primary school events involving over 300 participants. These events have included the BGN Family Year 2 All Star Cricket Festivals, Banbury Area Year 5/6 Tag Rugby Festival and Partnership Boccia.

Two All Star Cricket Festivals took place simultaneously at Cropredy and Bishop Loveday Primary Schools on Friday 27th September.  Sixty-six Year 2 children had lots of fun taking part in a range of cricket activities.  Thank you to Zoe Pugh and coaches from Oxfordshire Cricket Board, along with Year 9 BGN student leaders for doing a fantastic job delivering both events.

BGN and Wykham Park Academy Clusters joined together to take part in the Banbury Area Year 5/6 Tag Rugby Festival on Thursday 17th October at Banbury RFC.  Two hundred and nineteen children and 24 teams from 10 schools took part including Bishop Loveday, Cropredy, St. John’s, Orchard Fields, William Morris, Hanwell Fields, Hill View, St. Leonard’s, Queensway and St. Mary’s

All participants had an enjoyable day playing tag rugby at their level and improved as the competition progressed.  It was most pleasing to see children being allowed to play and make their own decisions in a relaxed and positive atmosphere.  Overall winners were Hanwell Fields A (Cup), Queensway (Plate) and St. John’s C (Shield).  Thank you to Banbury Rugby Club who were, as always are extremely supportive of the event and BGN students leaders (Year 7-10) for refereeing all 84 matches.

The Partnernership Boccia festival took place on Wednesday 23rd October at Blessed George Napier.  Children from from Deddington, Woodeaton Manor and Frankwise Schools took part and were supported by Year 7/8 BGN student leaders.

These leadership experiences have brought many benefits to the students involved.  They include developing their confidence, communication skills, organisational skills and independence.  Leadership is also credited with equipping young people with key employability skills and having a positive impact on their achievement.

Feedback from all the festivals have been very positive and our BGN students have received much praise from teachers, teaching assistants and coaches regarding their guidance and support offered to all participants at these events.
